Lions Environment Projects

International Project ~ Worldwide Tree Planting.
International President Wing-Kun Tam`s slogan for the coming Lion Year is `I Believe`and allied to this he has issued a challenge for Lions to furnish and plant 1 million trees throughout the world to improve the environment - a challenge which he believes will be met.
The District Governers present at the International Convention believe that a target figure of 4.5 million can be met.
This approximately equates to 4 trees per Lion Member throughout the world.

Taking into account the number of Clubs and Members in 105 NE, it is our belief that a target
of 1,000 is achievable and should be aimed for.
Among other important and essential attributes, trees have been called "The lungs of the World* in that they absorb and lock away harmful carbon based gasses.
In the U.K. environmentalists/conservationists consider that tree planting for environmental/conservation purposes, preferably be confined to `native broadleaf` trees,
and not `conifers`.
We do not include Sycamore trees which are not originally classified as a Native broad leaf tree and because of their rampant growth of seedlings which is detrimental to other adjacent trees and vegetation etc, they are known as the "thugs" of the woodland.
Regarding Conifers ~ the only exception is the Scots Pine which is our only indigenous conifer.
The Scots Pine should be planted in the right environment for it to flourish.

Where can we plant and where can we aquire the right type of sapling ?
The local Wild Life Trust, Woodland Trust, National Trust, District Council Environment Dept/ Ecologist will be more than willing to assist in this.
Ideally saplings should have been grown from seeds obtained from the region where they are to be planted.

Since 2000, the Centre For Improved Rural Health and Environmental Protection (CIRHEP) has been working to working with local communities to improve rural life through poverty alleviation, environmental education, and conservation and ecological regeneration in 25 villages surrounding the Kadavakuirichi Forest Reserve. Now they want to protect their dwindling water supplies through a major reforestation programme planting 800,000 trees over the next five years in the watershed on which they depend.
We want to find someone to help the first seven villages get going with the tree nurseries and the first phase of planting.
The Lions £1000, turned into £5000 by the United Bank of Carbon will fund 12,000 trees and play a major part in making all this work with village people sustainable in the long term.
A senior member of staff from one of UBoC's founding business partners, Deloitte, has worked in the field with CIRHEP in the Kadavakuirichi Forest Reserve and strongly recommends them and this project.
The University of Leeds School of Earth and Environment has screened and approved the project as both realistic and well managed.
With District 105NE Lions in place as our initial funding partners, it will be much easier to bring in further funding partners to develop the full scale of the project.
In this project, District 105NE will be converting seeds into something amazing:
SEEDS = TREES = WATER = HEALTH, LIFE and HOPE.
