Durham Lions Support Northumbria Blood Bikes
Durham Lions donated £300.00 to Northumbria Blood Bikes in recognition of their invaluable service which have been further enhanced by their link up with the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
Northumbria Blood Bikes (NBB) is a registered charity providing a free out-of-hours voluntary courier service for hospitals across County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. from 7pm to 7am weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. They transport urgent, emergency items such as blood, platelets, plasma, samples requiring immediate analysis and patient notes providing background information on A&E patients.
Commencing in January 2015 NBB, working in conjunction with their sister group in Cumbria, linked with GNAAS to initiate a ‘Blood on Board’ (BoB) service, enabling blood to be carried the helicopters, thus facilitating vital transfusions at accident scenes. Up to now the BoB blood scheme has enabled 11 critically injured victims to be transfused at the scene of their accident.
Dumfries Lions Golf raises £1,000
On behalf of Dumfries Lions Club, Lion Ken Humphries organised the Annual Golf Tournament at Moffat Golf club on July 11 and 12 teams of four people took part. The event raised over £1000 and thanks are due to the many businesses in Moffat who donated prizes for the competition and for the raffle. Most of the proceeds will be distributed to good causes in the Moffat area.
The winning team was DGHP and Ian Riddick, Des McCann, James Shirazi and Alex Haddow and they can be seen in the photo (top) with their prizes. The runners up were Robin McHarg, Steven Kingston, Eric Innes and Roger Porteous, shown in the photo above. The 3rd photo shows Lion Ken, Lion Diana and young helper with Lion Colin sorting out the raffle tickets.
Filey Lions Support Guide Leaders work in Thailand
Charlotte Dickinson and Florence Hargreaves head out to Thailand on 18 July after being selected from a pool of 40 to form a team of 12 to do a community project in Thailand called Valuing Girls. The team will be led by four adult leaders and the friends have been busy fundraising to make sure they secure their place on the trip. Each girl has raised £2,000 which includes a donation of £250 each from Filey Lions.
Charlotte said, “I have been a member of girlguiding since I was five and the trip to Thailand will be a once in a lifetime experience. At the moment it doesn’t seem real, and I don’t think it will until I’m there! Florence and I are close friends outside the organisation and it’s great to be going with someone who I get along with so well.”
Florence added, “I’m excited to be working with fellow Girl Guides in Thailand as it will be great to understand their culture whilst hopefully offering support to help these girls in the future who are less fortunate than myself.”

Scotch Corner Convention Update – July 2015
Just a few lines to update the District on preparations for Convention, which this year runs from 20 – 22 November 2015 at the well appointed and fantastically refurbished Scotch Corner Holiday Inn.
Bookings are starting to come in, but Lions are reminded not to wait until the last minute. Also, a plea to delegates who might not be staying at the hotel, but travelling from local clubs – again, we need to know you are coming, to get the logistics right. Please register with all of your requirements so that we can get the numbers right.
We have a full programme of light entertainments for you on the Friday “host night”, which will be based around an impressive three course hot and cold buffet. The menu selections are impressive and will have something to offer even the most discerning eaters!
The partners and guests outing to the world famous Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle has been fixed. We have acquired the services of a professional guide to ensure that our limited time in the museum is fully maximized. We will return to Scotch Corner for 3pm, in order to be present for our featured guest.
To effectively close the Saturday proceedings and send us away inspired to do even greater things in Lionism, we have managed to obtain the services of a very special lady. Tricia Stewart was the driving force behind the phenomenally successful Rylstone and District WI Calendar – the one that set out raise £2000 and ended up raising almost £4million for Leukemia Research. Their story has been told on film and is now a West End musical show. Tricia is unique – not many ladies can claim to have been played on screen by Dame Helen Mirren, or on stage by Anita Dobson and Linda Bellingham.
There is no truth in the rumour that Teesdale Club are preparing a similar calendar!

Edinburgh Lions help make Wester Hailes Fun Run 2015 a success!
Wester Hailes Fun Run 2015 took place on Sunday 14 June, and though the sun may not have been shining plenty of people came along to run, cheer and have a great time!
There was a celebration before the event where the Lord Provost Donald Wilson presented an award to Ellie Campbell who had won the design a Fun Run Poster competition.
The Fun Run, the fourth since it was brought back due to interest in older photos, saw participants run or walk a 5km route around Wester Hailes. Starting from WHEC the route runs along the canal, over the bridge towards Dumbryden before looping and heading up to Clovenstone and then back along the canal to WHEC. Over one hundred people endured the chilly weather to take part.
As an area, Wester Hailes has a complex and fascinating history, sometimes controversial, always thought provoking. It is a place of social historical significance both in terms of its physical transformation but also through the emergence of a strong community that developed what was once regarded as one of the most sophisticated forms of community involvement in the UK.
Lions Tom and Beth Jamieson from the City of Edinburgh Lions Club supported the day by doing the registration. Our service to the community – we serve as stewards. And our honoranry member Lord Provost Donald Wilson club braves it in his T-shirt regalia.
Wester Hailes Fun Run/Walk is a 5k route round Wester Hailes starting and finishing at the WHEC. It’s for everyone- serious runners, fancy dress runners, families, friends etc. You can run, jog or walk, it’s up to you! – so a fun day for all.
Hospice and “Home Away From Home” Benefit From Durham Lions
Durham Lions President Alvan Bailey and Secretary George O’Donnell visited St Cuthbert’s Hospice at Merry Oaks, Durham. There, we met Jade McArdle, the Community and Events Fundraiser, to make the formal presentation of our cheque for £350.00, which was raised by the proceeds of a challenge darts match held some time earlier at the New Inns in Durham between Ustinov College and the Ushaw Moor Catholic Club Ladies team. Jade was very pleased to be able to let us know that St Cuthbert’s, after an unannounced visit from the governments Care Quality Commission, had been rated as ‘OUTSTANDING’. There is no higher mark and no other adult hospice has thus far managed this. After the presentation we enjoyed coffee and tea served by cheerful volunteers in their tearoom and then had a walk around the lovely grounds surrounding the hospice.
Durham Lion President Alvan Bailey with Lions Miriam and John King visited the Butterwick House in Stockton on Tees and had the pleasure of being able to present a cheque for £300.00 to Tracy Bowstead. Butterwick House is set up as a home away from home for children, teenagers and their families to visit, some for the day, many for a few days. The children ranging from 0 to 19 years have a range of healthcare needs. Butterwick has many facilities including a large lounge/playroom, kitchen, hydrotherapy pool, sensory garden, multi-sensory room and craft room. It has four colourful bedrooms that can be adapted to suit a variety of needs. There are also facilities for families to stay. Sadly, some children need end of life care and this is provided in a thoughtful, caring way with a Bereavement Service available.
Every year, thousands of small cranes cross over the Himalayas at an altitude of 8000 meters for their seasonal migration. These demoiselle cranes are the smallest crane species, and their survival during this grueling migration depends upon the cooperation, teamwork, family structure, and harmony between every member of the flock.
In Japan, the crane has traditionally been a symbol of long life. In the Japanese art of origami, the crane is the most basic form that all children learn how to make. The custom of folding origami cranes is a meditative act that shows the heartfelt wishes of friends and family for the ill to become well again. The crane has also become known as a symbol of peace – not only in Japan, but around the world.
Peace, hope, determination, teamwork and uniting people through service are central elements of International President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada’s 2015-2016 presidential theme – “Dignity. Harmony. Humanity.”
Dignity through Humanitarian Service
One of the basic tenets of human dignity and self-respect is the ability to provide for oneself and for one’s family, yet millions of people face the future with little hope of bettering their lives and caring for their children.
Making a difference through service to children will continue to be a main focus area this year by strengthening or expanding our existing programs with the Children’s Dignity Initiative. Under this initiative, Lions are encouraged to expand service to children by:
• Supporting and brightening the outlook of children in hospitals
• Responding to the needs of children in refugee camps
• Addressing the needs of hungry children
• Continuing and expanding the Reading Action Program
Those are only a few of the many services opportunities that address the needs of children. More information about the Children’s Dignity Initiative will be available on www.lionsclubs.org.
Serving others. Our legacy of service has been cultivated for almost 100 years. In order to reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million people between now and June 30, 2018, we must triple our output of service in those areas and continue to encourage clubs to report their efforts via the Service Activity Report in MyLCI. In serving others, we are changing the world and sowing the seeds of harmony, understanding and peace.
Harmony through Cultural Exchange and Joint Global Projects
As an international association, we must understand and appreciate cultures unlike our own. District governors and council chairpersons are encouraged to connect with each other internationally to seek opportunities for joint international service projects. Clubs are also encouraged to participate in this initiative through our Twinning program. Interacting with members from different cultures and with different points of view will broaden our outlook and provide inspiration for activities in our own communities.
More Members Equals More Service
Our members and our clubs are the heart of our organization, and to continue to serve, we must continue to grow our membership. Our growth depends on many factors, including a dynamic Global Membership Team, effective marketing strategies coupled with membership growth programs, dedicated leaders beginning at the club level, and outreach to women and family members.
Together, we have built our membership to nearly 1.4 million, and must continue that growth to stay relevant in our next century of service. Be open to new ideas, and work with the members of your Global Membership Team and Global Leadership Team to find new ways to promote growth, engage members through service, and develop leaders.

Club presidents are critical to our success as an association. Each club president will be encouraged to transform the atmosphere of their clubs so that members feel confident and work in unison with each other and their communities.

The Ask One membership campaign starts at home. If Lions families are on the front lines serving their communities, we will gain the recognition we deserve as the greatest service organization in the world.

LCIF is at the heart of our worldwide service, using grants to create goodwill, eliminate human suffering, and restore hope and dignity for people around the world. Lions are asked to take every opportunity to support LCIF with your generous donations and Melvin Jones Fellowships.
Lion Jim receives his Melvin Jones Fellow award
Jim Reilly joined Lions in 1983 as a member of the then Redcar Lions Club which unfortunately closed due to lack of members in 1994. Lion Jim, with 2 other ex Redcar Lions, transferred to Middlesbrough Lions Club which was subsequently named Middlesbrough Teesside Lions Club.
Lion Jim was, and is, a canny Scot having been born in 1922 in Blair Drummond. During the war, Jim trained in Canada with The Royal Canadian Air Force before transferring to 7AFU in Northern Ireland for Advanced Training then on to 16OTU for the training as a member of bomber crews before being finally posted to 218 Squadron RAF Bomber Command at RAF Chedburgh. Flying Officer James Reilly served as an “air bomber” (bomb aimer) in RAF Lancaster bombers during the bombardment of German industry from November 1944 until he finished his first, and only, Operational Tour on 20th April 1945 having completed a total of 32 sorties. Until 2 years ago, Jim and 2 or 3 fellow aircrew met on an annual reunion near their base in Suffolk – sadly, as age has taken its toll, it is no longer possible for the ex-colleagues to meet.
After the war, Jim joined the explosives division of ICI in Ayrshire – he obviously enjoyed the “BIG BANGS” – before transferring to the company’s factories on Teesside. In his spare time, Jim continued his lifelong interest in athletics (he had been the coach for the Ardeer running club and his wife, Anne, was a Scottish sprint champion) by joining Redcar Running Club where he still marshals at weekly runs in the local park and half and full marathons which take place in the area.
As a Lion, Jim was very active and when fund raising, obviously has a way with the ladies – Jim’s bucket always had more money in it than anyone else!
At a recent Club meeting Lion Jim was presented with his Melvin Jones Fellowship Award by District Governor Elect David Wells – an award well deserved. Lion David congratulated and thanked Lion Jim for all his work as a Lion. All Club members also expressed their appreciation of the work Jim has done for Lions in the community.
Lion Jim’s celebrations were not over at the Club meeting – a week later he was celebrating his diamond wedding with his wife Anne at Redcar Cricket Club with family and friends and some of the Middlesbrough Lions.
Joint Celebration of 100 years service in Banchory
Banchory Lions Club was chartered in 1990 and this year celebrates it’s 25th anniversary. Some 50 years earlier in 1940 the Scotland Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was founded so it seemed entirely appropriate to celebrate with Banchory CAB. Of course 25 years of Lions and 75 years of CAB gives 100 years of service.
To celebrate, the two organisations chose to run a quiz night which was well attended and supported by the two neighbouring Lions Clubs in Aberdeen. In addition District Governor Lion Andrew Kerr Sutherland and Edinburgh Lion Lachlan MacKay drove north to take part.
From the DG’s point of view it was an evening of mixed fortunes having failed miserably in the quiz he managed to win a selection of beauty products in the raffle to repair the damage!
Banchory Lions Club was formed by a group of 21 enthusiastic local people committed to serving the Community of Banchory and supporting local Community Organisations, Individuals, Clubs and Charities. They celebrated their ‘25th Anniversary’ with the same enthusiasm as their founder members and continue to work to help others, young and elderly, who are less fortunate than themselves and make their community a better place.
They also have lots of fun doing it, meeting together each month for social events with family, friends and other Lions clubs within the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area. Two of their remaining Charter members are still very active within the club having survived 25 years of service!
Well done Banchory Lions for reaching 25 years and keep up the service. Congratulations!
