Aberdeen Lions Club

‘Nippy Dipper’ Boxing Day Dip

Based in the North East of Scotland, Aberdeen Lions Club welcomes as members anyone who genuinely wants to help others and to make a difference both locally and around the world. Our members who are young/old, male/female, from all backgrounds/walks of life, are bound together by a desire to help the less fortunate, the young and the elderly – and to make our community a better place.

One of our main fund raising events is the ‘Nippy Dipper’ Boxing Day Dip, which last year saw over 170 hardy souls enter the chilly North Sea on the day after Christmas, raising over £14,000 ($23,000) for a variety of local good causes. We are always looking for ‘dippers’ to participate and helpers to assist on the day.

Another major fund raiser, now in its second year are the Aberdeen Best Curry Awards, organised with support from the Evening Express newspaper. Following a period of voting by the public and then judging by a panel, the Awards are presented at a spectacular Gala Dinner, which last year raised over £9,000 ($15,000). This year’s Awards will focus on supporting mental health, with the British Asian Trust (set up by Prince Charles) and Mental Health Aberdeen being major beneficiaries.

The Club undertakes various welfare projects both in its own name and in support of local charities. These include the Lions School Voluntary Service Award, which recognises local senior school pupils who have done outstanding service to others – and Cakes for Care Homes, which provides large cakes to local seniors homes (for events like The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee). The Club also coordinates marshalling for the annual Juvenile Diabetes sponsored walk and is involved in organising Aberdeen’s One World Day, which seeks to promote the diverse cultural mix of the City.

As Lions, our aim is to make helping other fun and to build long lasting friendships amongst our members and with Lions members from across Scotland, the UK and beyond. All our members lead busy lives, committing only to do what they can, when they can.

Our members are people just like YOU!
