Banchory Lions Club

Banchory Lions club was formed in 1990 by a group of 21 enthusiastic local people committed to serving the Community of Banchory and supporting local Community Organisations, Individuals, Clubs and Charities. On the 12th June 2015 we celebrate our ‘25th Anniversary’ and with the same enthusiasm as our founder members we continue to work to help others, young and elderly, who are less fortunate than ourselves, to make our community a better place. We also have lots of fun doing it, meeting together each month for social events with family, friends and other Lions clubs within the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area. Two of our remaining Charter members are still very active within our club.

We are based in Banchory, which is a fine Scottish town or ‘burgh’ lying approximately 20 miles west of Aberdeen adjacent to the magnificent River Dee. It is surrounded by lovely rural countryside and attractive hills. The largest town in the area, it acts as a magnet for the local communities and has a fine High Street and other excellent facilities. For the visitor, the town has much to offer with two famous castles nearby, Crathes and Drum, both run by the National Trust for Scotland. The Bridge of Feugh offers the chance to see salmon leaping, and there are numerous fine golf courses in around the area.

We meet on the 1st Monday of each Month in the Guide Lodge, Banchory at 7.30pm where we discuss Lions business matters and organise our social events. ‘We welcome new members and volunteers’, so for more information about Banchory Lions and what we do call 01330 823795 or 01339 82214. We are ordinary people doing amazing things’ and we look forward to meeting YOU.

The Lions motto is “We Serve” and as part of Lions Clubs International, this makes us the largest service club organization in the World, with more than 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries.

Our main fund raising event is the ‘Banchory Lions Book Fairthat takes place on the first Saturday of each Month (excluding January) in Banchory Town Hall from 10.00am till Noon. We have over 4,000 quality used books to choose from, which we sell at just 50p a book, and a wide selection of Children’s books at only 10p each. All the money raised from the book sales goes towards helping many of our local community organisations, individuals, clubs and charities.

An example of our book sale proceeds is the ‘Over 70’s Annual Coach Trip’ that takes place on the third Thursday in the month of May each year, with lunch included followed by some shopping. This year on 21st May 2015 we are taking the over 70’s to Brodie Countryfare followed by shopping in Forres. It’s a great day out for everyone who goes on the trip and a chance to meet old acquaintances and make new friends.

We are always very pleased to support schools and youth based organisations and events, recent examples of these are a donation to the 1st Banchory Guides Senior Section’ at the monthly

We provide the annual Lions Club – School Community Service Award’ to Mintlaw Academy. We made a donation to ‘Banchory Sports Village Trust’ recently for an ongoing Banchory Community project.

These are just a very few of the numerous funding contributions we have made to support good causes in and around the Banchory area over the last Twenty Five Years of Banchory Lions.

We also attend and raise funds at local events such as running the raffle at the Banchory River Festival. ‘The Banchory River Festival’ is a charitable community event raising the profile of the River Dee and those who use and serve the river as well as Banchory and its community. It is a fantastic platform to raise awareness and funds for local charities, community group, and causes. The festival features a fantastic range of events & activities for all ages, including Arts, Music, Film, Heritage as well as an impressive display of stands from around Aberdeenshire & best of all, most of the events & activities are free. Banchory River Festival takes place over 3 days mid-June and this year’s festival promises to be biggest & best ever.

Each year at Christmas time the Banchory Lions with the help of the Deeside Piper, Morrisons store and the Burnett Arms Hotel, run their annual ‘Lions Giving Tree’ event. The Giving Tree is situated near the exit in Morrisons Banchory store, but unlike most Christmas trees in the festive season, the giving tree is decorated with coloured labels. On each label is the gender and age of a child, e.g. boy aged 15, girl aged 7. Members of the public can take a label from the tree, buy an appropriate present for that child and to take the present UNWRAPPED but with enough gift paper to wrap the parcel up and  drop the gift off at the reception desk at the Burnett Arms Hotel or at Banchory Museum (open Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays) or telephone Banchory Lions to arrange a pick up.

Our Charter

Our Charter

The Lions Giving Tree is set up to provide gifts for children in OUR community who would otherwise not have anything to look forward to at Christmas. The Social Work department provides the Lions with a list which has the gender and ages of the children who would benefit from a gift, at no time do the Lions know the identity of the families involved. Last year thanks to the generosity of the people of Banchory, over 90 children were able to have a Christmas morning with presents to unwrap, just like everyone else.
