City of Edinburgh Lions Club

Ed The Lion meets his fans!

The City of Edinburgh Lions club, part of Lions Clubs International, was formed in 1967. We are thus part of the largest volunteer service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members whose motto is ‘We Serve’. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at the Capital Hotel in Corstorphine, Edinburgh and any changes to our times are notified on our Club website. Being a member of a Lions Club is about having fun and fellowship. We take part in social activities where we often join with other Lions Clubs across our Zone and District, meeting old friends and new while sharing skills and welcoming new members. Our service to the community, locally, nationally and internationally was recognised in 2014 with the Inspiring Volunteer Team Award presented by the City of Edinburgh Council.

We work closely with a number national service organisations such as Marie Curie, Diabetes UK, and locally at the heart of our community, with groups across the City including Thornton Rose Riding for the Disabled. We work closely with our local schools on Peace Poster and Young Leaders in Service and we support the Outward Bound Trust. In the field of health, we promote Message in a Bottle to community centres, sheltered housing and individuals. We raise funds by bag packing, street collections, stalls at fairs, stewarding at events and a Santa Sleigh at Gorgie Christmas Lights each year. Come and say hello where you see our banners or give Ed the Lion a hug.

We promote wider Lions initiatives by supporting the Lions International Foundation. Their programmes include sight and health, youth volunteer and environmental programmes. As a club we work in partnership with several local opticians and community groups in central Scotland to collect used glasses and hearing aids. Details of collection points can be found at Recycle for Sight. We also plant trees right across the Lothians and we donate a proportion of our funds to LCI projects. We are twinned in fellowship with three other Lions clubs across the world: Lions Club Posadas, Dr Ramon Madriaga, Argentina, Lions Firenze Poggio Imperiale in Florence and Mzuzu Lions in Malawi, Africa. In partnership with Mzuzu Lions we contribute to the school fees of a pupil at the Edinburgh Girls School Engcongolweni, Mzimba, Malawi.

We are always on the look out for new members – volunteers – an hour of your time is gold to us. Why not get in touch and see what we can do together. Every penny we collect goes to our chosen charities. Further information and contact details can be found on our Club website where Ed the Lion is getting to know our Honorary Member, Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

Why not join us? Be a Lion. We serve.
