Scarborough Lions Club

Lion President Alan Deacon, Immediate Past President Lion Rob Hunter and Welfare and Community Services Convener Lion Audrey Carey presenting a cheque To HOPE a charity helping young people who have been physically or emotionally abused.

Started in 1959 Scarborough Lions Club is one of the oldest clubs in North Yorkshire. We are part of Lions Club International the world’s largest service organisation.

Lions are individuals who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and global communities, conducting and supporting vision and health screenings, building parks, awarding scholarships, assisting youth, providing help in times of disaster and need and much more.

Over the years we have donated to a variety of projects within our local community, as well as nationally and internationally. These have all been aimed at improving the quality of life for those less fortunate than ourselves.

We have our permanent sight campaign Sightfirst where we contribute funds for sight saving operations and collect spectacles to send to those who are unable to afford them. This major campaign has helped to save the sight of many thousands across the world.

Through Lions Clubs International Foundation, we contribute to major international disasters.

All funds raised by our Club members go directly to various individual and group worthy causes with absolutely nothing taken out for administration.

Our fund raising activities include our Christmas sleigh which travels around Scarborough the week before Christmas with Santa and his helpers. Another major fundraiser is our New Year’s Day dip in the North Sea which attracts hundreds of sponsored participants and thousands of spectators. Our bonfire night firework spectacular is also a big hit in the town. We also run fun casino nights for anyone looking to raise funds for their own charitable causes.

You could be in our own Lions Club Mini Bus taking a group of elderly and infirm on a pleasure outing – one of the many ways to experience the benefit of being a real LION!

Our Club is also very active with social events for members & their families who meet for dinners and social and quiz evenings – all designed to bring everyone together in a social and friendly environment. In addition we often meet with fellow Lions from other clubs for formal meetings, charter dinners and social events.

We meet at 7.30pm on the second and fourth Mondays of every month for 2 hours at Scarborough Rugby Club so why not join us and participate in the fun and great satisfaction of being a real part of the community.
