Teesdale and District Lions Club
Teesdale and District Lions Club are based in the beautiful and historic market town of Barnard Castle. We serve a largely rural community over a huge geographic area, stretching from Lower Teesdale in the east, Weardale to the north, Swaledale (including Richmond and Catterick Garrison to the South and upper Teesdale to the west.
The club were chartered in 1984 and became a mixed club almost 20 years ago. Over that time, we have provided a District Governor in Jack Seear, and numerous Cabinet Members in a wide variety of roles. Additionally, Lion Nick Baron was DG of his district whilst serving in Lincolnshire. Our next major commitment to District Cabinet will be to host the 2015 District Convention at the newly refurbished Scotch Corner Hotel, for DG Elect David Wells – preparations are well under way!
Although we have always demonstrated a keen loyalty to Zone, District, National and International causes, we do have a strong local focus. We have sponsored, and have very strong links with Barnard Castle Band, who reciprocate with their services at our numerous charity concerts. We have provided Trustee Board Members and a Chairman to Teesdale Citizens Advice Bureau, and provide all manner of help to some of their desperately needy clients, including all of the Christmas Hampers that we prepare.
We are significant partners to our local hospice (Butterwick) and organising Garden Fetes, Quiz Nights, loaning of garden fete equipment and setting up a regular standing order to provide vital funding. Similarly, we support local residential care homes and the local senior citizens lunch clubs, regularly providing entertainment and fellowship.
One of our newest initiatives involves partnership with Barnard Castle Rotary Club, on the highly innovative and newsworthy “Veg Out in Barney” scheme. This provides large containers of free vegetables around the town and requires our members to maintain these on an ongoing basis and help out at the market garden were these foodstuffs are propagated.
We are strong supporters of our local schools, Scouts and Guides. We regularly sponsor students partaking in overseas voluntary work.
Perhaps our most successful events in terms of numbers of people served and the publicity gained, are the free Bingo with Fish and Chips events held twice a year for local senior citizens.
As well as a very diverse range of service activities, the Club have a great social calendar, ranging from our informal and popular Charter Dinners, Christmas meal, Burns Night Ceilidh, attended by 120 guests and numerous barbeques and club get togethers.
Most of our social and fundraising events are held in the superbly appointed GlaxoSmithKline Sports and Social Club, in Barnard Castle, where we meet at 8pm on the first and third Thursday of each month. Meetings do follow an agenda, but are normally light hearted and great fun.
If you like the sound of what we do, please come along and meet us.
