Whitby District Lions Club

Our Club was formed in 1970 and has served the community ever since. We have three main activities, our Beer Festival now in its sixth year, the sponsored Lyke Wake Walk and our Boxing Day Dip.

Our confirmed dates for the 2015 Beer Festival are Thursday 30th July, Friday 31st July, Saturday 1st August and Sunday 2nd August 2015 to be held in the same venue as last year The Whitby Mission & Seafarers Centre, Haggersgate, Whitby, YO21 3PP.

We will have over 30 local or regional microbrewery, authentic, real ales and a variety of traditional real ciders on offer. There will also be some local sourced food available to complement the beer or cider. All money raised goes to local charities and good causes.

Whitby Lions stand ready to help Lyke Wake walkers.

Every year Whitby Lions organise a walk over the length of the Lyke Wake Walk for charity. At first glance it seems unremarkable enough: the route covers 40 miles of the North York Moors between the villages of Osmotherley in the west and Ravenscar near the east coast. The hint that there may be something unusual comes from the name – “lyke” means “corpse” while “wake” is the act of watching over it. The killer punch is that, in order to be able to say that you have “done” the Lyke Wake Walk and declare yourself a dirger (men) or a witch (women), you have to make the trek from end to end within 24 hours. And yes, some Lyke Wake walkers go the whole hog by dressing as undertakers and carrying a coffin (an empty one, in case you were wondering).

What better way to spend Boxing Day?

What better way to spend Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is that time of year to dig out the old clothes or fancy dress costumes that you don’t mind getting completely soaked! If you would like to raise money for charity whilst having a laugh with many more people who are just as daft and want to run into the North Sea on Boxing Day then please do, we will be very happy to see you all first thing on the 26th of December. All you have to do is register yourself at The Copy Shop which is just inside the railway station in Whitby, take your sponsor forms and try and prise money out of people for a great cause. You can raise money solely for Whitby Lions or if you would like to do this for another charity 80% of the money you raise goes to your chosen charity and 20% to Whitby Lions so that this amazing club can keep supporting our local community.
