in Steel Club, Medomsley Road, Consett
Consett Lions Club was formed in 1962 and now meets twice per month in the Consett Steel Club where a warm welcome awaits all visitors.
Shortly after our formation further Clubs were formed in Sunderland, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Carlisle.
Consett lions were successful in sponsoring a club in Lanchester. This Club continues with energetic young men who have made their mark in Lionism.
We were also active in sponsoring Stanley Lions Club, our near neighbours.
CONSETT is a busy rural town in North West Durham.
Situated on the A691 road, it is a dormitory town and the main seat of administration for Derwentside. The town was linked with the production of Iron and Steel from 1840 till 1980 and since then it has been a dormitory town for the Tyneside conurbation and central Durham.
The central part of Consett has few reminders of the past beyond the 19th century but some of its suburbs contain buildings of historical or architectural interest.
Shotley Bridge on the northern side of the town was famous in the 17th century for swordmaking. The Mohl and Oley families operated their industry from the Wood Street area of Shotley Bridge
In Benfieldside the Quakers had a meeting house - the original dating from 1653 and the second, still standing, from 1700.
South of Leadgate, at Crookhall are the remains of a seminary built by refugees from Douai during the Napoleonic wars.
The Derwent reservoir, not far from Consett is popular for sailing and fishing.
