Dumfries Lions Club

~~~ Dumfries Lions' Raft Race, Lions having fun raising money
During its 25 years, Dumfries Lions Club has served the local community in S W Scotland and has achieved a lot by raising an average of well over £10,000 per year for local charity and other good causes. The funds have been used to help youth, the aged and the disadvantaged and the Lions like to think they can assist anyone who needs help, provided of course the cash is available.
To raise the necessary sums, we Lions regularly hold FUNdraising events and one of the most enjoyable is the annual raft race. This fancy dress event, which is a real fun day, is appreciated by participants and spectators alike and the activity can raise several thousand of pounds for charities in sponsorship and entry money.
Dumfries Lions with the Moffat Mountain Rescue
The annual curling tournament is an event which is held in October at the Dumfries Ice Bowl and in the past has involved teams from all over Scotland and abroad. Sponsorship and entry fees result in a profit which benefits the charitable causes.
Many individuals and groups needing help have benefited from the funds raised by the work of the Dumfries Lions and one of them was the Nith Inshore Rescue team and another was the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team who received cash from the Lions for the purchase of replacement radio batteries.
Every year the Lions club provides assistance to over one hundred of our senior citizens in the form of a parcel of groceries.
The bus shelter provided by the Club
When the club was first formed, a bus shelter was erected at the Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary by the Lions. However, after 25 years of wear and tear, the old shelter was in need of replacement and when the bus stop was re-sited, the club decided to erect another one and dedicated it to their late charter president, Lion Alan Drysdale.
Over the years the club members have sought to achieve the goal of uniting the Lions in fellowship and to celebrate 25 years of Lionism, the club decided to host a major social event, the District 105NE 2006 Convention. 150 delegates attended this two day gathering of Lions Clubs members and their partners from the whole of Scotland and NE England, representing over 50 Clubs. The format for the weekend a full day's meeting on Saturday followed that evening by a black tie dinner and dance which has the dual function of celebrating the convention and Dumfries Lions Club's 25th anniversary.
Although the club has 28 members and is very active, we always need new members to bring in new ideas and fresh vigour. If you are a person who would like to serve the community by helping others less fortunate than yourself, then our secretary, Lion Bill Walker would be delighted to hear from you.
