Peterlee, the town, is named after Peter Lee, the man, who was born in 1864 in Trimdon Grange, County Durham. By the age of 21 he had worked in 15 pits, and, wishing to improve his education, he traveled to the USA in 1886 and worked in mines in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky
He married in 1888, and quickly became Chairman of the Parish Council, and the Co-operative Society as well as a local preacher.
In 1909 he became a member of Durham County Council, and Chairman in 1919. He progressed to become President of the Mining Federation of Great Britain. Peter Lee died in 1935.
Peterlee, the most distinctive of Durham's new towns, has what most new towns can only dream about - Castle Eden Dene. This is a 500 acre valley protected as a National Nature Reserve, which is renowned for its yew trees whose twisted and gnarled trunks thrive on the cliff side giving the Dene a magical, mystical atmosphere. The Dene is also one of the few remaining strongholds of the red squirrel.
Peterlee also has Peterlee and District Lions Club, part of District 105NE of Lions Clubs International, the largest Service organisation in the world.
