Sunderland lies at the mouth of the River Wear, the parallel road and rail bridges illustrating its industrial identity.
St. Peter's Church (AD 674) predates the industrial age when Sunderland was birthplace of the Venerable Bede (AD 673) and became a centre for scholars.

St Peter's contains probably the first stained glass made in Britain and Sunderland grew to be an important glass making centre and hosts the National Glass Centre.
No longer a booming ship building town and the port for the Durham coalfield, many centuries of these former industries are excellently chronicled in the Museum and Library.
