Lion Roy Chambers ~ Scarborough Lions Club

DG Lion Roy Chambers with his partner Janet

On behalf of Janet and myself I send you our best wishes for this Lionistic Year. During the year we visit as many Clubs as possible and meet as many as from the family of Lions. I hope we all have a fun filled challenging year.

The experiences of the MD Convention in Torquay and the International Convention in Chicago will stay with us for a long time. But now is the time to get down to work. Being part of Lions Clubs International, the worlds largest and the best Service organisation, means we have a reputation and standards to live up to. Looking at the work done by our own Clubs, locally and the international projects which "improve the quality of Life" for so many people, makes me Proud to be a Lion.

I have plans in place to visit 10 Clubs by mid September Details of the next 11 will be available soon. I am operating a strict first come basis and I have already agreed to attend several Charter Nights.

At the International Convention in Chicago, we learnt the vision of the new International President and his motto "Challenge to Change". As Lions, "We Serve", in line with our Presidents theme I would ask you all to "Change through Service", to think outside the box, and strengthen our organisation. Although all our current projects have to carry on by setting some Challenging objectives for the year for the District and myself I put extra focus on 3 areas, Leadership, Membership and Youth.

That way we can work together to achieve our objectives and have a fun filled year in the name of Lionism,

Leadership

Our District Leadership Officer, reclaiming a role he filled for 6 years in the 90's, ran a successful event in Ponteland Last June. Because of the distances Club Officers in our District have to travel, we are now taking the Leadership Forum to Region and Zone meetings during the coming year. I urge all Club Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Vice Presidents, Membership Chairs and Club Members to attend these forums and keep up to date in our changing organisation.

Membership

To allow us to Serve more and more deserving people, we need more and more active members to strengthen our current Clubs. All Region and Zone Chairpersons look at the hinterland within your area looking for Villages, which could benefit from a Branch Club. Youth

I firmly believe Youth is our future in Lionism. We have an active "Opportunities for Youth" programme, being driven by our O4Y Chairperson and her team. I would like every Club to support at least one Youth activity. Be it, Football, Peace Poster or the Football Competition. To strengthen our ability to live up to the motto "We Serve" I am asking each Zone Chairperson look into feasibility of a LEO Club in each Zone. This will also give these young people the opportunity to develop their Citizenship skills.
