Dumfries
Lions Club

So,
what do the members of Dumfries Lions Club do?

We
are a charitable organisation and our aims are to help less fortunate people. We
are one of the most active of the Lions Clubs in Scotland, and locally the Club
has provided help for youth, pensioners, the sick, the blind, the disabled and
many more.
We
have participated in many Lions welfare projects including International eye
camps, Water wells, Youth award, Youth football, and the hosting of
International Youth visitors.
Recently
we hosted the 1998 International Youth Centre in which 46 youths from 27
countries participated in a 10 day programme arranged by our club and financed
by Lions Clubs International.
To
raise money to finance our welfare work we run the following FUNdraising events
each year:
Curling Weekend,
Raft Race, Duck Race, Wheelie Bin Race,
Car Boot Sales, Auctions,
Raffles, and many, many more.
New
Bus Shelter for Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary
Twenty
five years ago, Dumfries Lions Club was chartered and the first community
project was the erection of a new bus shelter outside
the D&G Royal Infirmary. As that shelter is now getting dilapidated and the
buses no longer stop at that spot, the club decided to mark their silver jubilee
by erecting a new one at a cost to the club of £2500. The shelter is to
dedicated to the late Alan Drysdale who was the Charter president
The
photo shows Club members watching President John MacColl and Christine Drysdale,
Alan’s wife, cutting the tape to officially open the new facility. The
ex-London Routemaster bus, in the background, was taken out of retirement to
mark the event.
