CAIA Gift for Living

 M. O. E. T.

It's a champagne quality treatment

for mothers and babies.

The expression 'Life hangs on a thread'

has quite a literal meaning in post war Bosnia

A partnership of the Lions Clubs International, Multiple District 105 and Child Advocacy International.

'Gift for Living' continues in it's work of rebuilding the infrastructure for the innocent and suffering children of the former Yugoslavia. It provides healthcare and training to patients and staff regardless of their ethnicities or background.

MOET  - it stands for Management of Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma - is the newest development.

MOET will enable healthcare professionals to learn new life saving skills in treating women during pregnancy and their babies at time of birth. As part of the project essential medical equipment will be provided in 5 maternity units.

Over the last 14 years, Hospitals in both East and West Mostar have benefited - the old hospital in the west being given state-of-the-art equipment and renovation, and the newly built hospital in the east receiving high tech life saving equipment.

Doctors and nurses have been trained, both here in our Multiple District and on their home territory. Teaching, in the formidable shape of Sister Angela O'Higgins, has been delivered to the heart of this troubled area, bringing child-friendly nursing techniques to this formerly rather clinical system.

In 1999 Gift for Living moved into it's second phase, major assistance in Sarajevo. Over US$300,000 worth of hospital equipment was installed - including ambulances and a dentist chair. Training of doctors and nurses is constantly being developed, bringing the benefits of up-to-the-minute Western medical techniques into communities where the normal infrastructure of life has been put on hold for many years now.
