Supporting Special Olympics GB

The partnership with the Special Olympics dates back over 14 years, and it was a privilege for Lions Clubs to be involved with the 9th GB National Summer Games in 2013, which were hosted by The University of Bath.

This is the country’s largest sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities and the Lions members who supported the Families Programme were praised for making the Games a great success.

Special Olympics GB reported great feedback from the athletes’ families and friends who particularly enjoyed the Families Hub in the Games Village and the Families Night event which were run by Lions volunteers.  These activities demonstrate the fun side of being a member of Lions Clubs as the volunteers provided families with somewhere special to celebrate athletes’ achievements and create some unique memories.

The Special Olympics GB National Summer Games are held once every four years with 1,700 athletes from England, Scotland and Wales with learning disabilities competing in 12 sporting events.  Further information about the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games can be found at: www.specialolympicsgb.org.uk

Lions support a number of other youth related projects – see the How We Help page for more information.
