Morpeth Lions assist Special Olympics clubs
For a number of years Morpeth Lions Club has assisted at a day of sports involving Special Olympics clubs.
Organised by David Hunt and staff from the three UK locations of Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP), the Unified Sports – as it is called – gives great pleasure to participants and staff members alike.
The event at Morpeth’s Riverside Leisure Centre saw 30 CCEP employees take part together with more than 30 athletes from Special Olympic Clubs. The range of sports included six-a-side football, badminton, boccia, carpet bowls and swimming.
David is a ‘Friend of Morpeth Lions Club’ which often sees his company providing bottles of drinking water at certain Club events. Recognising the need for independent help and refereeing he knows he can rely on the Lions Club coming to the rescue.
Morpeth Lions Vice President Margaret Trewick said ‘It was a fantastic day. Competition between the three teams was fierce. East Kilbride and Wakefield were determined to defeat Morpeth who were last year’s overall winners. Morpeth defended well but in the end Wakefield emerged triumphant and took the most trophies and medals along with the overall winner’s trophy. Everyone went away with a medal, including the Lions! The enthusiasm and competitive spirit among all the athletes is wonderful to see and a great fun day was had by all involved.’
