Quoit a Zone 4B Challenge
Having beaten Easingwold Lions at ten pin bowling to retain the Zone Cup, Malton Lions received a challenge to take on Filey at quoits. Malton President Nick had ensured his team was fully trained although they perhaps didn’t take the training as seriously as they should have done. Equally Lion John Harrison, their secret weapon, was unfortunately not available on the night.
So it must be said that Filey probably went in to the evening as marginal favourites having tried to psyche Malton out at the Zone Quiz in May by relating stories of their combined experience at quoits. (Is that quoital experience??!!)
On a wonderful summer evening the two sides lined up at Beck Hole near Goathland for their needle match. Indeed it was a very close run thing with little to pick between Filey and Malton – nail biting stuff but Malton President Nick and new member Lion James Lindenberg clinched the last game that gave Malton victory.
Although Malton won it has to be said that Filey were a class act, getting the only ringer of the evening when Maureen at the start of her game with James landed the quoit over the peg. Fortunately James refused to be intimidated and rose to the challenge!
The Beck Hole Quoits Club showed us their usual warmth and hospitality and the monies raised from our evening go to the Yorkshire air ambulance – which was more than £100 in total. The Birch Hall beer at Beck Hole was fantastic … it’s such a pity so many of the Malton team were driving and could not indulge as much as they wished.
So Zone 4B – who can knock the mighty Malton off their perch? – challenges please to incoming President Lion Mark Harrison.
Our thanks go to Lion Steve from Malton who made all the arrangements including nice sandwiches at the pub and to Canon Lion John Manchester for arranging the excellent weather!
