Campaign Sightfirst II is making a real difference to the numbers of people in the world going blind from preventable blindness.

As you will see our District has raised (with Pledges) some US$ 30,901.39. as of 20/08/07, in the two years since CSFII has been on the go. Our target, which is less than that set by HQ but discussed with the Sector Co-ordinator, is a minimum of £10,000 +/- and a maximum of £20,000+/-. however Clubs are welcome to donate as much as they want or can. Remember a £3 donation saves someone from going blind.

a donation of £3 prevents one person from going blind

A full and up to date breakdown by Zones, Groups and Individual District(NE) Lions Clubs is available from me on request and will be published periodically in Spotlight, it will also be continuously updated and available on the District Web Site through the members only news page.

Over the past year CSFII has been the main recipient of donations which are Sight related. SightSavers still is continuing with its excellent work and I would like to express thanks on their behalf to Dumfries, Sunderland, Lanchester, Allendale, Darlington, Middlesborough, Morpeth, Washington and Yarm Lions Clubs for their continuing support during the last Lions year.

Thank-you all clubs who have donated so far and thank you in anticipation of those who will give or give again in the final forthcoming CSFII year.

N.B. Now is the best time to get accreditation (Present or Future) for a Melvin Jones Fellowship. You know it makes sense!

Sight First

Campaign Sightfirst II logo

Building on a challenge back in 1925 when Helen Keller threw down the gauntlet to Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" the work of Lions Clubs has been synonymous with service to the blind.

Lions instigated the white cane; introduced and continued to support guide dog schools; operate the majority of the world's eye banks; provide sheltered workshops and vocational training and have built up an impressive record in sight related issues.

With around 42 million people suffering from blindness in the world today, Lions, internationally realised that many suffered from illnesses, conditions and problems which were generally not too difficult to treat successfully using relatively simple processes. In 1990 the International Lions 'SightFirst' project was launched with the aim of eradicating preventable and reversible blindness, hopefully by the early part of the 21st century.

Many millions of pounds have been pledged to run a variety of campaigns under the Sightfirst banner and already many thousands of people, particularly in third world countries will not face the prospect of living in a world of darkness.
