Stranraer & District Lions Club

Serving Our Community

Our first project in 1991 was a joint venture with Machars Lions Club for the Boxing Day bonanza raffle to boost the Garrick Hospital Appeal Fund for a patients' lifting hoist.

The next project was raising funds for the local Phoenix Club Garden Project. The idea behind this project was to encourage members of the Phoenix Club, who can suffer from a number of various complaints, to enjoy working or relaxing in the garden. members not only raised the money, but with a great deal of time spent manually working, this project was completed.

Prior to the project being completed, we lost a dear friend in Lion Hugh McDowall who along with Lion Ronnie Irving were the driving force behind this project.

At the end of the project the garden was named

"Lion Hugh McDowell Memorial Garden"

Lion President, Hugh McWhir

accompanied by Sick Children from various local hospitals and are joined by one of the Clowns who helped entertain the children throughout the day

Other FUNdraising events included Race Nights, walking the Southern Upland Way and donating benches to the local Riding for Disabled group. Since then we have raised income from Fashion Shows, Duck Races, Charity Concerts, Fun Cruises, Auctions, Jumble Sales, Car Boot Sales and various other events.

We have also assisted partially sighted athletes, installed a telephone for a young lady with an illness, assisted local hospitals and residential homes, a leukaemia sufferer, Aird Unit, young doctors from Albania, Stranraer Youth Band, Lions SightFirst Campaign and many other groups and individuals.

We have also had joint projects with Machars Lions, our Mother Club. Equipment has been supplied to Newton Stewart Hospital, Talking Newspaper for the Blind and provision of a Special Car Seat for someone with M.S.

The largest project undertaken was another joint venture, this time with Galloway Groundbase Friends and Parents of the Adult Resource Centre (now called Groundbase Ltd.).  Stranraer, Lion President, Rod Beswick presented specialist equipment valued at £4000 to Wigton District Council for use in the Ryan Leisure Centre Swimming Pool.
