Sunderland Dip raises £47,000 – but under threat!
Then came the Boxing Day Dip! Wow what a crowd, some 863 dippers took to the cold North Sea in magnificent fancy dress costumes. Judging the fancy dress was a very difficult job for Lion President Peter, Leo President Amy, and the Mayor of Sunderland. Fire crews attend the dip to spray the dippers before they enter the sea. This also adds to the fun as the dippers try very hard to avoid the water spray.
The Dip raised over £47,000 for charities and various good causes, of which the Lions Club will get twenty per cent. The beach collection was £890.
Another brilliant effort all round, very hard work for the Lions, but an excellent result and we send huge congratulations to all the wonderful dippers and thanks to the public for their support.
Sadly though the future of the event is under threat as it is believed the Seaburn Centre will close in March. The Club is checking if there is any chance the Council may help out as this is the biggest fund raising event in the City. If you think you can influence the Council, please help the Lions Club to keep this wonderful event going. This year an amazing 1,100 dippers were registered and 863 took the plunge!.
Thanks everyone for your support and your amazing fancy dress designs. Here are just a few photos of a wonderful day.
