Harlaw Academy Leo Club

formed in Aberdeen

Wednesday 23rd November 2005

Sponsored by: Aberdeen Lions Club

Aberdeen's newest youth voluntary service group - the Harlaw Leo Club - held its official Formation Meeting at the Albyn Club, Albyn Place.

Harlaw Leo Club will join hundreds of other Leo Clubs around the world, which together form the junior branch of the 'Lions Clubs International' voluntary service organisation. The Club, which is sponsored by Aberdeen Lions Club, is school-based. It is open to Harlaw Academy's S5-S6 pupils and already has 50 amazing members.

Invited guests at the Formation Evening included representatives from Aberdeen City Council, Harlaw Academy, Aberdeen Lions Club, along with Lions Clubs’ officers from across Scotland and NE England.

Leo Club co-ordinator Malcolm Hogg is a Lions member and teacher at Harlaw.

"Harlaw Leo Club will join other Leo Clubs across the UK but will be unique by being the only current Leo Club operating in Scotland", he explained. "As well as helping others, the Club will provide an excellent opportunity for the 'Leo's' to develop leadership and organisational skills which will be useful in later life"

Already the newly formed Leo Club is making a difference. When members heard that a Romanian teacher and two pupils were unable to take part in the Comenius Scheme (a link-up in Aberdeen with schools in Denmark, Spain and Romania) the Club decided to step in. Following a successful Jazz Night held in the school, the much needed funding has now been found. But the Harlaw Leo's aren't resting on their laurels. They are already turning their eyes to other projects, including joining with their Lions Club sponsors to send redundant educational equipment to schools in Malawi and Romania.

All in all the future looks bright for youth voluntary service in Aberdeen.
